DPWH CONTINUES ITS CAMPAIGN AGAINST ILLEGAL AND UNSAFE BILLBOARDS





The Department of Public Works and Highways formally resumed its “Oplan Baklas Billboard” Program today by dismantling five illegal and unsafe structure in Metro Manila. In an interview, DPWH Secretary Hermogenes E. Ebdane said that they had already given an ample time to the billboard owners to secure the necessary permits and make structural adjustments on their structures in compliance to the National Building Code’s Implementing Rules and Regulations. “We must take advantage of the good weather condition and assure public safety by continuing the strict implementation of Administrative Order 160 and 160-A of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo” Ebdane said. Among the illegal and unsafe billboards that were dismantled today are advertising billboard of Timex in Quezon Avenue, a billboard in Sta. Mesa, another in Guadalupe and a giant billboard at Manila Seedling compound in EDSA. During the dismantling operation, Mr. Bertram Lim, owner of Timex Billboard said that they are willing to rectify their mistakes and committed that they will voluntarily dismantle their billboard, nevertheless the DPWH has put down the tarpaulin sign. Of the total of 14,122 inspected billboards, 8,789 were already dismantled nationwide to date. In Metro Manila alone some 2,974 unsafe and illegal billboards were already demolished by DPWH.
